OVER-POPULATION
JAPAN'S BIG PROBLEM
WORLD-WIDE IN SCOPE
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) HONOLULU, 24th July. Dr. Elliot Mears, professor of international trade at Stanford University, addressed the Institute of Pacific Relations. He said that Japan's problem of over-population was international in scope, and urged aid in solving her problems. A strong nation was the best customer. He said that one solution was to help Japan to increase her trade by lowering the American tariff, thus stimulating industry in Japan and increasing employment. • Dr. Shiroshi Nasu, of Tokio Imperial University, said Japan had reached saturation point in population, and that unemployment was chronic. He suggested as remedies birth control, reorganisation of the economic system, and expansion of emigration.
