THE NEW VALUATION
(To tta ttltor.)
Sir, —Unless the suburban and residential ratepayers wake up, the new valuation will mean an increase in the amount of rates payable by them. Suburban ratepayers should demand emphatically that concurrent with the new valuations coming into force there should be a decrease in the rate per £. The whole object of the revaluation is that the relative amounts paid by different sections of the ratepayers should be adjusted in accordance with their land interests. The object of the revaluation i* not that the City Council may be enabled to extract larger amounts in rates from everybody, but rather that it may take a larger amount from, the valuable city properties and a .smaller amount from the already over-taxed suburban properties. This can only be accomplished by a reduction in the rate per £ concurrent with the new valuation. Residential ratepayers should realise the position and act accordingly.—;. I am, etc., SUBURBANITE.
