DROWNING ACCIDENTS
EFFORT TO COMPILE TABLE

CHBISTCHUECH, 17th Juse, The New Zealand Shimming Council met last night. Mr.' C. A. Edenborough (Auckland) wrote forwarding a cheque for £.108, the council's proportion of ■the account of the original New Zealand Swimrqing Association in Auckland, which was wound up. It was do* cided that the money should be. placed to the capital account, and the .treasurer was requested to submit a report as to the best means of giving effect to the resolution. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Edenborough for his work. ' ;
Air. A. Miedonald said he would like to see a table compiled showing the number of drowning accidents in Hew Zealand each year. He was of the ppinion that a number pf good swimmers were being drowned. It would be interesting it" they ceuld find put what proportion of those drowned could swim and. what propprtijm could not. An effort.should be: m'ado :to teach swimmers to avoid trouble. : ■ ■

The said he had never known a case of a good-swimmer being drowned. If overyuody could swim, fully 90 per cent, of'the drowning accidents that occurred wbud not occur.
The; chairman said that they might try to get a'record, pf downing accidents classifying them according to whether '.the victims .were swimmers, non-swimmers, or doubtful. It wss decided after further • discussion that an effort should bo made to compile such a table. • ■•
