(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. An unusual accident occurred on board the American steamer West Calera at the Central Wharf shortly before midday yesterday. The wooden main topmast snapped and fell on the deck, where it broke into a number of pieces. , ■

The accident happened when' the crow were hoisting the wireless aerial into position, it having been lowered to avoid the cranes while the cargo w.-s being worked. The falling masfr struck the deck on the port side of No. 4 hatch, between, the ventilator and the winch. Had it fallen towards the stern it would have certainly killed some of the waterside workers unloading No. 5 hatch. The men who had been working No. 4 hatch had finished and left.

A topmast to hold the aerial was fitted, before the steamer sailed for Hobart yesterday afternoon.
