COLD AND CHANGEABLE

As predicted yesterday the weather clouded over and rain fell. Early last evening the weather was bright, and the wind dropped about ,5 o'clock. There was a calm until 3.30 o'clock this morning, when a southerly, came up. This was preceded by a heavy shower, 11 points of ram falling. The weather then turned f2?V Snow was reported during the n glit,. and this morning in the South. .This morning snow was still falling on the Southern Alps. Deports also showM that there was snow on the hills aboutXhristenmch, Naseby, Duuedin, and Balclutha Barome^ic pressure is rising in the South and is due to rise still further. Cold and changeable conditions are forecasted generally showery in the northern and East Coat districts, with snow on the higher _level in. the South, particularly about Marlborough. The weather, however should improve'after about 24 hours In the meantime variable and strong winds are predicted, southerlies prevailing northward of Kawhia and East Cape, and southeasterlies, strong to gale at times, about Cook Strait. It is probable that an improvement will follow for a few days, but towards the latter part of next week the Dominion Metorologist (Mr; D. C. Bates) expects that there should be a decided change in conditions.
