THE KAWARAU

THIS YEAR'S ACTIVITIES

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Eveninn Post.")

DUNEDIN, This Day. Although the gates at Lake Wakatipu wero closed without a hitch, and the Kawarau Eiver is showing a satisfactory drop, tho drainage of the river will be slow, and at least a week will pass before it reaches its lowest level down the whole length of the river. The level is lower than nine months ago, when tho gates were first closed. Tho Shotoyer River will bo a bij factor in the fall of the Kawarau. Although tho Shotover is bringing down less water than last Aupust, this river is still above the normal water level. The frost continues and the sides of some of the streams are covered with ice.

Tho Consolidated Kawarau Company, wliich has about sove'nty claims, is concentrating on only three—Nos. -100 (main cauip), 74, and 34. A party of West Coast miners are ready on 79 and the manager of Vogcl's Vision has been working at the main camp at Roaring Meg. The Cromwell claim-holders are' the only others in readiness. Mining on a big scale will not be undertaken this year, no matter how far the river level falls. Prospecting only will be •lone to ascertain the machinery and plant needed to work tho river properly.
