NEW ZEALAND SCORES

AGAINST LEICESTER

DACRE m FINE FORM

(A.P.A. and "Son.") (Eeveived 16th June, 10 a.m.)

LONDON, 15th June.

The New Zealand cricketers commenced their match with Leicestershire at Leicester to-day, and had first use of the wicket. The home team did not play Geary, the English Test bowler, and in the visiting team Henderson and Dempster were substituted for Bernau and Oliver. The attendance was estimated at one thousand.

During the pre-luneb play the New Zealanders lost four wickets for 107 runs. Blunt and Mills started uncomfortably, and in the first half-hour scored 26 runs. The total was advanced to 36 when Blunt was taken at the wicket. His contribution was 24. A brief collapse followed two more wickets falling before the half-century was reached, Mills being caught in the slips and Dempster at mid-on. Subsequently Lowry, after scoring five, played a ball on to his wicket. The collapse could not be attributed to. the state of the wicket, which was good. The visitors afterwards made a big improvement, and when the tea adjournment was taken the total had reached 235 for the loss of seven wickets. M'Girr and Page, while in partnership for the fifth wicket,.put on 102 runs in ninety minutes. Page hit very freely, and his score of 74 included nine 4 's. M' Girr made 56. At the interval Dacre was not out with 31.

The day's brightest batting was provided by Dacre, who drove in powerful fashion and scored 90 runs in seventyfive minutes. His Bcoring efforts included two 6's and twelve 4's.

Merritt and Henderson in their lastwicket partnership improved the score by 56 runs in thirty-five minutes. The innings realised 371 runs.
