HAWKES BAY TRACK NOTES

On Tuesday morning at Hastings, according to the "Tribune," the track was heavy, all: times being on the slow side.' A cold bleak wind made matters unpleasant- After Having a big break in the first half-mile; Coot just beat Road Hog over : six furlongs in Imin 22 2-ssec. Loveband, alone,, went well over four furlongs in 53sec. Firebliglit was sent a working gallop, over a mile in 2min. Blissfulness did a'-similar task, but finished poor-, ly. Othon, with a;. fair "■weight up, took lmir llsec for five furlongs. Royal Damon beat Kilmezzo over six furlongs!in lrai: 20sec—a good gallop. There Vfaa but little difference between Essential and Clavers at the end of four furlongs run in 54 2-ssec. Hathor got to the end of six furlongs run in Imin 21sec. Royal Diadem, Radiate, and Highway went over a mile, and finished in that order in the fair time of Imin 56scc. Radiate showed much improvement on his Saturday's gallop, Goid Bos was far too good for

Heather Blend over seven furlongs in lmin 37sec. Eloquent took 54seo to cover half a mile, but was not ridden out. Maunga appears very well after his trip, and was restricted to trotting. Handy took lmin O^sec for five furlongs. Toka and Abisogne went well within themselves to gallop six furlongs in lmin 24sec. Both are promising. Merry Mint just beat High Heather with Epistle a couple of lengths away over five furlongs in lmin 7%se(^— a good gallop. Oak Rose and a gelding by Spalpeen went five furlongs in lmin llsec. Calluna (Lewis) and Peneus (A. M'Donald) jumped well over five hurdles, the latter finishing in front. Good Mark (G. Green) jumped cleanly over seven 'steeplechase fences. Merry Singer (A. M'Donald) gave a brilliant display over ten of the big fences. For the first six Potona ,(A. Lord) went with the Merry Moment gelding, but-was badly outjumped at each fence.

At Napier Park the track was in good order and several good gallops were witnessed. Rascal and Piperenzo were sent 'over seven furlongs, taking lmin 34sec, covering the-first three furlongs in 39% sec. Beacon Light went ■ twice round, working steadily. Rakauponga and Humoresque finished together in a run over seven: furlongs, leaving the last six behind in lmin 22sec. Inner Harbour finished ahead of, Green Grocer over five furlongs run in lrain 6sec. Stretton moved well at half ' pace, goings" twice round. Penman ■ was given easy ; work •on the plough. Shirley came out for light exercise, but did not work. Merle and: Tame-, terangi.were sent over a mile, taking lmin Slsec. The first four were left behind in 55sec, and the- six in lmin 22sec. Merle finished very strongly. Kirkwood did a fast gallop, going twice round alone. Tiri worked well over one mile and a half at half pace. Kaiti, Royal Lineage, and Watchman galloped over four furlongs in Msec. , Kaiti and Royal Lineage finished oh almost!even terms, Watchman being fully.three, lengths away;

Apparently A. M'Dpnald will be riding over fences" again at the Hawkes Bay meetings, for he was schooling Miss: G. Maher's horses at Hastings on Tuesday. It he makes his reappearance over fences on Peneus in the opening event at Napier Park on Saturday it will be a rather remarkable coincidence, for it was on that horse in the first race at the Napier Park autumn meeting that M'Donald struck the trouble which kept him out of the saddle until quite recently.

. ; Royal Abbey, who figured among the contestants at the recent winter meeting held at Ellerslie,'-is now in his eleventh year, and in totalling tip his performances I find that he has contested 108: races, writes "Phaeton." When raced at four years old with an unsightly „ fetlock, it seemed a good shade of odds that the big chestnut would not'be found among the active brigade at 11 years old. Royal Abbey is without a winning bracket to his name this season, but, anyway, he can be given credit for completing the course in contesting the Winter Steeplechase, ■ and maybe when ■ next season comes round he will be again found under silk, for. he walked away.; apparently quite sound after his effort at ElleraHe last week. ■'■' ... .-. ■■
