PARAMOUNT THEATRE.
"Variety," now showing at the Paramount Theatre, is a remarkable picture. The star' actor • and actress in the new play are Emil Jannings and Lya de Putti. "Variety" opens with a prisoner telling his life story to the warden. Twenty years before the man had beea a member of the world's greatest acrobatic act. His partner, Artinelli, made love to his pretty, wife. He .challenges him to a duel, ends his career, and gives himself up to justice. : _ The orchestra, under the' direction of Mr: R. Caultoiv' contributes several special numbers,
"THE RAT.' ' The big British production, "The Rat," adapted from the successful stage play of the same name by David L'Estrange, Constance Collier, and Ivor Novello, is the attraction to be screened at tlie - Paramount to-morrow. "Harrison's" report says: "If the majority of the pictures that are made in Great Britain are as well directed and acted, and the plot is as well constructed as is that of 'The Rat,' the exhibitors need not worry about shortage of good pictures. All that will be necessary for the British producers to do, then, will be to create a demand for their product among the public." From the point of view of production, "The Rat" is distinctive; the scenarist has shown unusual intelligence; he has taken so good a care to dp the characterising that when the heroine offers to sacrifice her life so as to shield the man she loves, one takes such a sacrifice as natural. Box plans for "The Rat" season are now open at the'theatre booking office, open daily from 10 a.m.
