JEROME K. JEROME

The late Jcromo IC. Jerome is of 'a past generation. He is known slightly among presont-day authors, but his humour is of the Victorian era .-rather than of tho present day. Born in 1859 ho first made his namo as a humorist in 1889, when ho, published "Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow" and "Three Men in. a Boat." For 15vo years from 1892 he was co-editor, -with Robert Barr, of "Tho, Idler," ono'of the pioneers of the. presont-day stylo of magazine, but which ceased publication some years ago. A one-act play Qf Jerome's was produced at tho" Globo Theatre, under the title of."Barbara," in 1886,' and was followed by many others, the best know of which ia "Tho Passing of the Third Floor Back." Ho wrote a number of later books, including "Second Thoughts of an.ldlo Follow" ana "Three Men on tho Bum-: mcl." The late Mr. Jerome was educated at Marylobono, London, and was' in turn clerk, schoolmastor, and actor before he settled down to journalism.
