NAPIER'S MAYOR
WILL HE HAVE TO RESIGN?
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
NAPIER, 14th June. The position of the M,ayor of Napier is at present in doubt, in view.of the passing for payment by the council cf an account to a company in which the Mayor (Mr. J. Vigor Brown) is a shareholder.
The council's debt was incurred prior to the closing of nominations for the last election, but the account was passed at the meeting after the election at which Mr. Brown presided. The Mayor has since disposed of his shares in the company concerned and paid them the amount of the council's account, and the company in turn has made a refund to the council.
As it is not clear whether the refund and the disposal of shares will have the effect of making the Mayor's position legal, Mr. Brown vacated the chair at this week's meeting of the council pending advice from counsel. The borough solicitors are. to be asked for an opinion, and Mr. Brown is also consulting, his adviser*. ----—..
