MAKING HASTE SLOWLY.
jj The story is told of a lab- m m ourer who, on beine rebuked by ■ HI Ins foreman for adopting go- g g sloiu" ladies', retorted, "Rome ■ g wasn't built in a day, yer knotv." H |To which the foreman replied, B | "Fes, but I wasn't on that job." ■ 1 Now that New Zealand has made I g a forward move in dealing with ■ g research problems, there are H § many people who, like the fore- B jj man in the story, expect things M g to be done all at once. In mat- m g ten' of research, however, it is I jj a wise plan to make haste slow- BH ly, andf. it is a realisation of this JJ g that has prompted the Depart- 1 g tneni of Scientific and Industrial B Ij Research to tread ivarily so far ■ U,asits programme .of activities is 1 g concerned. It is'the intention of jl jj the Department to concentrate B | at present almost entirely on the B H Institute of Dairying to be estab- B |j lished at Palmerston North. B g There are many people, parti- jj 1 cularly those good folk in and §j H around the town of Palmerston m jj North,, who have been inclined B ■ to view the Department's aclivi- j| [j ties rather impatiently, but they jj jj should bear in mind that there I H are many difficulties to be sur- jj U mounted before any definite 1 S progress can be made. They g Jj must not expect sensational re- § g suits in the first few weeks or §J jj even in the first few years. Re- 1 1 search activities in order to be I J of value must be gradual, and jj ■ they must be thorough. If a Jj H problem is rushed its solution is ■ | probably postponed. It is the | 3 intention of the Department to m m do as much as possible ivithin § a the rather limited means at its m ! disposal, but it is not the inten- §| J lion, to attempt the impossible B Jj in the hope of spectacular re- §§ 1 suits.
