AMERICAN MAIL

NO DELAY IX DELIVERY

The Post and Telegraph Department made a reply to-day .to a letter in "The Post" complaining of the delay to the newspaper and parcel mail by the Makma. from San Francisco. Thy Makura arrived in Wellington on Cth June, nnd the box sorting of letters was finished at 12.30 p.m.. that day and tlie newspaper, sorting was completed the same evening. On Wednesday, the Bth June, two days after the arrival of the Makura, the Marama arrived from Sydney with a large English, Australian, and American mail of 653 bags, the latter having left America shortly before the departure of the Makura from San Francisco. The sorting of the letters by this mail was completed at 3.30 p.m. on the day of arrival, and the newspaper sorting by 11 a.m. on the next day. The statement that a great portion of the newspaper mail by the Makura had not been delivered on the Wednesday is not understood by the Postal officials. American newspapers delivered on Wednesday or Thursday of last week would have arrived in Wellington by the Marama from Sydney, and not b}' the Makura from San Francisco.
