PRINCE IN THE WEST
VISIT TO OLD STATE QUARRY
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, 11th June. At the end of a four days' busy stay m the West Country, the Prince of Wales visited the famous Delabole slate quarry at Okehampton. He curled himself up in an open iron truck on a bed of straw and sacking and was let down to tho workings. The veteran controlling the lowering gear boasts that nobody in his care has ever been injured during ■ the whole thirty-six years. *
It was not intended that the Prince of Wales' should descend at more than five miles an hour. The Prince, however, quickly shouted: "Faster," then 'Faster still.'.' He thoroughly enjoyed his rapid descent for the five hundred feet.
The quarry has a. remarkable record. It has. been worked continuously for 4.00 years, till stopped ono week during last year's general strike.
Slate quarrying must be the healthiest occupation in tho world. Tho Prince chatted with eight retired employees whose ages ranged from 70 to 87. One of them began work at tho age of nine, and had eight sons, seven of them working in tho quarry.- -
