GENERAL STRIKE
DISPUTE AT ARAPUNI

-■ v 'IE AWAMUTU, This Day. All-the workmen engaged at the' Arapuni 'electrical works declared a strike at midnight" ou Sunday. The dispute arises outof the payment for overtime. It is '.stated that the employers should pay double rates for all overtime in excess of four hours, and the neglect to do so gives rise to the present dispute. •• A mass meeting of the men was held yesterday, and' it reached tho decision to declare a general strike from midnight/ ■ ■ : v ■■ ■ ■
This morning Mr. J. Kelly (the president) and JE. Lake (the secretary of the union) went to hold a conference with the Armstrong, Whitworth representatives, but the conference was refused by the company, who stipulate that the men must return to work before any consideration is possible.
Mr. Handman, the company's manager at Arapuni, is at present in Auckland. • In the meanwhile all the work is at, a -standstill.'- . ■■■-■.
