RED CROSS ACTIVITY

WELLINGTON- DIVISION

The annual report o£ the Wellington Division o£ the New Zealand branch of t lie British Hcd Cross Society (Peacetime Activity), slates that the work has shown marked expausion in all branches, particularly in regard to the first aid, home nursing, hygiene,- and sanitation classes. A great deal of useful information relating to matters of health had been forwarded by the Secretariat of the League of l?ed Cross Societies.

During the winter months free public health lectures ■ had been held at headquarters, under the auspices of the society, and had been well attended. Thanks were due to Bis. C. E. Childs, .1. H. Beaumont, Sylvia Chapman,.and W.H. Simpson for giving these talks. Bed Cross Society members had co-operated with the promoters o£ Health _ Week, and had serv-ed-on several committees., A- model sick room and a Junio: Red Cross exhibit had been staged, aud Sister Lewis had delivered six. health talks at various factories during the week to audiences totalling S4O persons. Over a thousand persons had been given instruction at the Bed Cross classes; 19 medallions wer,e awarded, and six bars to medallions,itwo merit awards also being made. ;Well-attended classes had been lield- at Upper ' Hutt, Island Bay, and Khandallah. \A, handsome cup had been donated by the Hon. Dr. Colling to stimulate enthusiasm, and efficiency in home nursing team .work, and.had been awarded to a teain.captained by Miss-Margaret Sheehy. ; ... - ..-;. ■ ;■.- During the 'Wellington •Winter Show! the Voluntary Aid Detachment had established a first aid station;and.ladies' rest-room, and ■ members were continuous in attendance Attendance at sports grounds had also been ■maintained,'.and there are now nearly 200 members of the detachment ready to function effectively in emergency. Much assistance had been given families in sickness and indigent circumstances, and work was also carried out qn behalr of the civilian blind. The T. G-. Macarthy Trust had granted £50 for this work, and this sum had been supplemented by proceeds from concerts, etc. Compared with the previous period the balance available showed a', slight'improvement, but receipts showed a; perceptible drop, the year proving' a difficult one; from the point oft.view of funds. How--ever, as a set off'to .the contraction, shown in revenue there jy^S.a material, diminution in expenses.! 1 Gonsiderablejexparision had taken place in-the-junior movement,, on which £361 19s-2d',ha.d been expended, whilst the revenue i'lram this" source' amounted to £100 12s" :6d. ■".
