DUNEDIN, This Day. Michael Joseph Shannon, a young nian, who was brought from Wellington yeßteiduy, was charKcd before Mr. J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., yesterday, -with having secreted tobacco in the Dunedin Prison. Shannon was also charged with the theft of nine bottles of whisky, a glass, cigarettes, of the value of £3, and £3 in money, the property of Ellen Catherine Metcalf. Both chargeß were admitted. The Chief-Detective said accused was released from prison on loth April, after serving a sentence for theft. That night he went to the back of the prison and put some cigarettes through a window, evidently for th« purpose of supplying a prisoner. A few days-later he called on the probation officer, who gave him a ticket from Ashburton. The same night hevsvent to the Crown. Hotel, where he had previously been employed, and helped himself to the whisky, cigarettes, and money. He disappeared front the hotel next morning, and was arrested a day or two ago in Wellington. The property,had not been recovered. The Chief-Detective added that accused had "been admitted to probation, but had failed to keep to the terms of his release, and was sent to gaol. On the first charge accused wag fined ,£2 and 10s_ costs, in default seven days' imprisonment, and on the second he was sentenced to three months' hard labour.
