MAX ARRESTED FOR DRUNKENNESS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. After Ernest Wright, aged 31, had been arrested for drunkenness yesterday, it was discovered that he was on probation for theft. He then had to answer a. charge of failure to comply with the terms of his probation. Wright pleaded guilty to both charges. The probation officer said that he did not know what could be done for the accused, who had been transferred on probation from Auckland to Wellington. He was now a member of the crew of the Maunganui, which was sailing to-day for Vancouver. Wright stated that Mr. Mills, the probation officer in Wellington, had given Him permission to join the vessel on 10th May. ■He had been ordered to make restitution of the £31 which he had stolen when a lodge secretary, but he had not repaid a penny. The accused said that he had had only four shandies, and that the 49s found on him came from tips. He was fined 10s for drunkenness, and was convicted and ordered to come up within-three months on the other charge. Wright informed the Magistrate, Mr. Jt'Kcin, that, lie would earn sufficient to make good the stolen money in full by the time the steamer returned.
