THE TRADE DELEGATION

FARMER AND HIS MOTOR

The Britisli motor trade delegation is duo at Ai(;kland on Monday. The members are Sir A. Boyd Carpenter (JLP. for Coventry), Mr. Alan B. Fcnn (technical adviser), and Lieu-tenant-Colonel A. Hacking (secretary of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders). The delegation will travel by motor, not by train. This will give the members an opportunity of seeing something of the New Zealand roads. True they will see tho very best of the roads,-but; I'oven-nt-their very best our highways fall far, behind .tho British Isles. It, is a pity, however, that something, cannot be done in tHo way of introducing the members of the delegation to the needs of tho fanners and run-holders by taking them to the backblocks and some typical "homesteads, where, they would quickly learn what is required, of a car on tho farm. There is a danger that the delegation may convince itself that in the British car it has a superior machine even tor colonial conditions. The-fact is however, that the farmer does not want a "superior" machine. He wants something ihe can use for all kinds of purposes without fear of "scratching the paint"—something roomy, with power to spare, high off the ground, and capable,of running in deep carttracks, all at-a cheap price. After all the recurring market for cars in NewZealand is the farmers' market and travellers. In the great majority of cases the pleasure car is now bought lor a lifetime, and most city cars are pleasuro cars, confined mainly to use on good roads. Tho farmer wears out a car, quickly on the average. He ™s, .lt'. no.t on rough up-country roads ■button the farm itself, crossing & cd f .fi«w«.
