CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. 4-8 the result of fhe raid on the premises of Alfred Vivian Whitta, who was convicted of bookmaking, the Consolidated Fund has up to date been augmented by £1169. Three more men were fined yesterday for betting with [Whitta. . ■ John Cornish 'Wilrnot, of Dunedin, had written to the Court, and Mr. Brown (for the prosecution) said that it wag evident from his letter that the bet was fora friend, and not for Wilmot himself. The Magistrate saia WTilmot apparently was a man of considerable age, and, according to his statement, in a poor financial position. The fine was £2 and costs, in default fourteen days* gaol. Thomas Edward O'Brien, a bushman, of Taumarumii, admitted in a statement read by Detective-Sergeant Younc that he had made two bets with Whitta* but had no, luck, and both doubles had "missed." O'Brien was fined £5 and costs, or fourteen days' imprisonment. Mr. L. 3. Hensley appeared for John M' Arthur, and said that his client was a cook on a station at Hcriot, and was a married man with two young children. According to a Heriot solicitor, M'Arthur was a decent, steady chap. The Magistrate: "He was a foolish man, in those circumstances, to bet, wasn't heJ'' There was no evidence that M'Arthur had made more than one bet, and he Was fined £2 and costs, in default fourteen, dqnr' gaol,
