LEAGUE TRANSFERS

DISCUSSION IN AUCKLAND RESIDENTIAL QUALIFICATION (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. After discussing the applications of L. Brown, and B. Davidson, of tho City Club, for transfers to Wigan Club, England, the Management Committee of the ■ Auckland Eugby League last night decided:—"That subject to the conditions of the contract between the New Zealand and English Leagues boing complied with, the transfors be approved." ' • • In tho courso of the discussion, Mr. E. V. Fox said he would like to know more about tho conditions o£ the transfers, as any League players who wont on tour were professionals. It was rumoured that a large sum of money had beon offered to Brown and Davidson, and it was tho Auckland League's business to Icnow all about tho arrangements entered into. Mr. \V. Solomon objected to Mr. Fox's remark's that League players in Now Zealand were professionals. "If such is the cose, I don't wish to associate myself- -with tho game," he said. It would be a selfish action to stand in the way of the transfors. The two players were intent on bettering themselves, and wero rewarded for their ability in a certain direction. Mr. C. Adamson said delegates must fust considor the loyalty shown by the inajprity of tho English clubs, which were evidently keen to protect Now Zealand in regard to honouring tho agreement of the residential qualifications, .demanding two years'" sojourn in England. The chairman (Mr. W. J. Hammill) said New Zealand, with Australia, had fought hard to preserve tho two years' residential penalty imposed on colonial players. This protection had been tho salvation of tho code, but would now be Wiped out by the English Leaguo if these transfers - were approved. ■ ■ ' An amendment to approve the transfers was defeated by 9 votes to 7. The New Zealand Council, which meets to-day, will ' make the final decision.
