WHEAT AND FLOUR

PROTECTION PROPOSALS

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. When interviewed by a "Star" reporter, Mr. 11.I 1. M'Cullough, produce manager of Messrs. F. Winstone and Co., stated that the Auckland merchants were entirely against any increase in the present duties on wheat and flour, They were not against a reasonable protection for the wheat grower and the miller, but considered that the prosent duty of £.3 a ton on flour and 2s per cental on wheat was ample protection. However, the proposal announced by the Prime Minister, the Bight Hon. J. G. Coates, had to come before Parliament, and the local traders were hopeful that the better sense of the members would result in it being rejected.
