STEAMERS TO PAY OFF

MANY MEN AFFECTED

(United Press Association.—Copyright.)

(Eeceived Ist June, 11 a.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day.

As there is no evidence of a settlement of the coal trimmers' strike at Newcastle, the crews of ten inter-State steamers are to be paid, off to-day, and the vessels laid up. Four Union Company steamers will be idle, but as the crews of these vessels have their home ports in New Zealand'they will not bo paid off immediately. Another matter now iv dispute is the wasto of meals. The secretary of the Trimmers' Union states that when engaging trimmers the Stevedoring Association notified the men of the number of meals it thought they would require on the job. On many occasions the work did not last as long as anticipated, and some moals were wasted. In January last, on reference' tc a board, it gave judgment that the men were en-' titled to compensation for waste meals. Tho Stovedoring Association, however, rofused to grant compensation. This is now tho main point in dispute.
