SHIPPING SERVICES

PROPOSED COMMISSION

(By Telegraph.)

(Spatial to "Tht Evtning. Put.")

DTJNEDIN, 30th May. Questions are being asked in Dunedin as to when the Prime Minister (Mr. Coates) will set up the commission to inquire into the new possibilities in regard to the intercolonial and coastal shipping services. Many men would like to know whether evidence will be taken in Dunedin, since this is the port that suffers most by the existing arrangements, and; also the port that may possibly find the money if another lino of vessels is required., . In the conversations that take place about thcso matters one often hears the suggestion that if the State would guarantee against absorption by weight of money, Dunedin would take the lead to-morrow in providing a new service in "order to bring this port fully within the shipping circuit for passengers as well as cargo. That such a scheme is at any rate worth considering is made promising by the good work that the New Zealand owned steamer Holmdale is doing in freights between Dunedin and Wanganui. Nobody repents that Venture.
