The second day's play of. the match between New Zealand and Sussex was marked by solid scoring by the vis-itors-in reply to the home team's score of 316. Blunt and Dempster, who had made 11 runs without loss^on the first day,, gave, the New Zealanders a splen-

did start. The excellent first-wicket »tand by these two batsmen realised 125 runs in a hundred minutes. Dempster made 57 and Blunt 67; the latter's scoring strokes including eight fours. ,/ Page and Lowry were associated in another good stand. The latter, driving powerfully, registered a century dur-a-period, of a hundred minutes' play, in which a total of 163 runs was compiled.. Lowry waß dismissed as the result of a fine catch by Wensley in the outfield. The captain's score.of 105 included eleven .fours.

After the fall of the fourth' wicket James and Dacre took the score to 340. Both were dismissed before the tea ad-

journment, James being very unlucky in being run out through a misunderstanding. At the interval Now Zealand's score was 363 for six wickets— M'Girr not out 4, Oliver not out 18. Early in the final session Oliver had the bad luck, to be dismissed in the same manner as James. M' Girr carried- on until the score had reached 402, and finally Merritt and Bernau put on 53 runs in forty-five minutes. The innings, -which occupied 355, minutes, closed with the total at 466.
