PETONE PLAYING AREAS

At last night's meeting of the Petoiio Borough Council the Reserves Committee reported with regard to the allocation of the playing areas that a conference had been held with representatives of the Rugby, Association, Rugby League, and hockey bodies, and recommended that the agreement with tho Wellington Rugby Union should bo renewed for five years, except that the rental be increased to £300 per annum and that the Union make no charge to the Association for the latter's ground. .Should it be found possible and advisable to provide an extra ground as the result of the recent exchange of land, the Hockey Association is to be given first consideration. Councillor dimming objected to the ground being given to any sports body for a term of five years. Under the present arrangement the Jtugby Union paid A 275 per annum for the ground, and the Football Association had the use of one playing area on an annual payment of £10 per annum, while the Union received all tho gate money. He considered that each sports body should have- a turn on the Recreation Ground, and the people's,park should not be bartered away to the highest bidder. Hib motion that the matter be referred back to the Reserves Committee was carried.
