BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.

Meetings of the various branches of the Wellington Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society are being held in the city and suburbs, the organising secretary (Mrs. Porter) has spoken at the following meetings upon the aims and objects of this great society: Wadestown.— The meeting was held at the house of the president, Mrs. Hill. •Mrs. Thomson (secretary) gave an account of the work for the year, which was most satisfactory. The following were elected: Mrs.Hffi (president), Utl Turner (vice-president), Mrs. H. D Thomson (secretary); Mesdames Ensall, Thomson Hill, Turner, M'Kenzie Misses Stewart, Cooke, Haylock, and Crawford (collectors). The resignation of Mrs. Inglis (who has left Wellington) was received with regret. Mrs. Hill entertained all to afternoon tea ?? d received a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs. Turner's singing was greatly enWed- Revs. J. Ashley Jones and J. H. Mackenzie consented to preach upoa the work of the Bible Society at the beginning of the annual effort, which starts almost immediately. Makara.—Mrs. Hislop was re-elected president, Mrs. Bowen secretary, and Mrg.-Jervis, Mrs., Bowen, and Miss Rene Gaskin collectors.

Melrose.—Mrs. F. G. Tonks presided over a large gathering. Mrs. Disft? (secretary) was kept busy allotting the various streets for the voluntary collectors. The following were elected:— Mrs. P. G. Tonks (president), Mrs. Du«P (secretary), and Mesdames Munn, Oliphant, Martin, and Abercrombie (collectors). At the close the president entertained all to afternoon tea. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded her. The committee started work at once.

Newtown.—The Missionary Guild of the Methodist Trinity Church held a satisfactory meeting, the Rev. A. N. Scotter, who opened the meeting, spoke in appreciative terms of the Bible Society.

Porirua.—A branch was formed at the residence of Mrs. Stevens. Mrs. J. Harris and Miss Knight volunteered as collectors and decided to extend their efforts to Tawa Flat. Mrs. Stevens entertained all to afternoon tea, and an enjoyable timo was spent. Mrs. Stevens was elected president and Mrs. J. Harris secretary. Karori,—Mts. Guthrie entertained the members of this branch.at her home. Mrs. Guthrie was re-elected rs president, Miss Sinclair secretary, and Mesdames Chapman, ShoaTer, Atkins, Wat ers, Caughley, Guthrie, Redgrave, Gjording, and Misses M'Gregor, Wood, Sinclair, and Laurenson collectors. local ministers have agreed to preach upon the work at the annual effort.

Lower Hutt. —The Yen. Archdeacon Hansell presided at the meeting of this branch, which was held in the Presbyterian Church, and paid a tribute to the work of the society, especially with regard to translation, in. which branch he is deeply interested. The Eev. J. M'Caw, who also took part in the meeting, said he had been interested in the work all his life, and spoke warmly of the support it was to all missionary enterprise. The following were elected; Vice-presidents, Mesdames M'Caw, HanSell, and Lopdell; secretary, Miss Sladden. The election of president wea held over. A hearty vote of appreciation was passed to Miss Sladden for her energy in working up the branch. Mrs Lopdell and Miss Sladden entertained those present to afternoon tea. The list of collectors will be given later when completed, the very inclement weather preventing the presence of several.

At all the meeting*, great pleasure was expressed at the announcement that Dr. and Mr*. Howard Taylor, from China, would be the chief speakers at the annual meeting of the Wellington Auxiliary on 28th Jane, of which full particulars will be announced later.
