ZIMBALIST

THIRD AND FINAL CONCERT

Zimbalist, the famous violinist, gave his final concert at the Town Hall on Saturday night. Once again he subjugated his audience, not so much by profound depth of musical impulses as by the exquisite beauty of his tone and hi* astonishing command of the technical resources of his instrument.. He is bo compelling in his security and his polished art that the listener almost ceases to think of a deeper fervour and emotion. The chief work of the programme.was the famous Mendels sohn Concerto in E Minor. The charming principal subject of the first movement is stated almost at once by the violin At this point Zimbalist gave a full realisation of the romantic spirit of the theme and the movement as it proceeded was capivating in its colour and lyrical quality; The cadenza, opening with a aeries of bold arpeggios, was brilliantly played, and in the andante the violin and the piano joined in a duet of incomparable beauty. The finale, taken at a great pace, was a magnificent display of'virtuosity. There was fire and abandon in "A Fantasy From Carmen '. (Sarasate), and the "Romance in It Minor (Beethoven) wag sung by the violin with engaging suavity of tone. A gossamer-like gem "Musette." by Ranieau, had all the elusive charm of muted strings Sri tr* B Ay Anglais" (Wttersdorf), a twinkling dance tune, had to be repeated The richly contrived "Prelude" (Bach) was dazzling without appealing. ZimbaUs? K'S encores and these included iraumerei and Schubert's gracious "Musical Moments," and brought a great conAnth.m L Clf°f by Playing «»•'National -antnem on the piano. -.'■'■
