TROTTING IN AUSTRALIA

The" well-known Epsom trainer, J. Shaw, who went across to Sydney a fortnight ago and effected the purchase *n behalf of Mr. 11. Moodabe of the pacer Western King, arrived back in Auckland by the Maunganui this week. As Western King is located some 300 miles out of Sydney, Shaw did not bring the horse back with him, but arrangements have been made to have the horse brought over either by the boat leaving Sydney to-mor-row, or the following Friday. In conversation with an Auckland pressman, Shaw.said that there were plenty of 2.20 horses in Sydney, but the percentage of those who promise to develop into good handicap horses was very» small. On the .other hand, there were some good unhop- . pled horses, and Some Rock was a real racehorse without the straps, and easily the best in Sydney. " "They have a great opinion of Concliff over there," said Shaw, "and they are confident he will reach the highest company in New Zealand, as they consider him one of the best pacers to ever leave Australia. I did not see our old friend, Andy Brown, but- he is assisting J. Sheehan to handle some young horses. Just .before I left, Maggie Pronto, with the hopples on, won the Flying Handican going 2.16."

The Epsom trainer -will now get busy on his team, who are to race at the winter fixture of the A.T.C., and will put the final polish on Jewel Pointer, Amaris, and Co.
