IRISH FREE STATE

GENERAL ELECTION

HOT CAMPAIGN LIKELY"

DE VALERA IN THE FIELD :

(United Prea Association.—Copyright) LONDON, 24th May.

The General Election in the Irish Free State begins to-day with the issue of the writs. *A hot campaign is expected till Bth June. Ministers are already addressing the electors.

There are eight parties in the field— Government, Kepublican, Independent, Clan Eireann, National, Farmers, Labour, and Sinn Fein. Interest centres in the Republicans, led by De Valera, who is reported to have returned from America with plenty of money, enough to put many candidates forward. De Valera claims that he will take supporters from the Government, in which event he would enter the Dail and assume office, but would refuse to take the oath, thus immediately reopening tho treaty issue. Captain W. A. Eedmond's Nationals are expected to put up a stiff fight. The alignment of parties will become clearer in a few days, when the manifestoes have been issued.
