A JACKING DEVICE
;■■ In ■ American cities the parking of Mrsso, .as to occupy as littio spaco as possible is an uuuto problem. One ingenious solution has been devised by ii Baltimore engineur, Mr. V. V. Williams. It consists of special jacks, ono of which is attached permanently to tho front of the car just behind tho front axle, and a second to tho roar of tho car just behind tho rear axle.
Each jack is carried on two small whools shod with solid tiros and sot at right angles to the road wheels of the car, and a transverse shaft operates tho two worm gears by which each jack lifts its end of the car. Tho two trnnsvorse shafts aro in turn operated by a longitudinal shaft mounted within a t'ranio sitlo member, mid this shaft is driven by a chain and sprockets from tho transmission systom of tho car. It is, therefore, possiblo for a driver to run alongside'n parking space and, by operating tho controls provided, to cauao tho car to be packed up under its own power. Also, since power can be transmitted to tho small whoela which now support the car,", bo can. cause it to movo sideways into position close to tlie kerb, while he and tho passengers mean? while romain comfortably seated. When they wish* to proceed the car may as easily bo brought out into tho roadway..
