OBITUARY

Tlio death occurred this morning at his homo of Mr. William Arthur Ward Grenfcll, after a long illness, which kept him from his dutios for tho past eight months. Tho late Mr. Grenfcll was born imOamaru in 1864, being a son of tho lato Mr. Michael Grenfell architect, of that town. Ho was for many years chief clerk in the office of the Into Hon. Mr. T. W. Hislop. For health reasons he went to West Australia in 1890, and was there for twelve years, having varied experiences on the Coolgardie goldficlds. He came to Wellington in 1902, ana after threo years with Messrs. Thompson Bros., Ltd. he became secretary of tho Wellington Employers' Association, in which position ho had remained over since. Always a keen athlete, in his younger days he was prominent in cricket, and also represented Otago at Rugby. He was also a prominent member of the Wollinaton Bowling Club, where he learned the game. Ho was over forty years of asjo wjien ho commenced bowling, and ho played as lead for Por.teous m the first real Dominion rink championship. Tho team was: Grenfell A Erskinc, W. ,T. Thompson, and Porteous. Ho and S. Potter won tho Dominion pairs in 1921, and he had played many times in Centre tournaments with a fair measure of success. For twenty-two years ho was one of tho most popular members of his club. ITntil recently ho was president of the Monungton Golf Club. Mr. Grenfcll was a member of tho Tarauaki Street Methodist Church, and in past years did good work in the Sunday School and as secretary and librarian. Ho was well known in industrial circles as a prominent advocate of the employers' interests, and was hold in respect and esteem by employers and workers alike. Mrs. Grenfell survives her husband, and there are threo sons, Harold, Norman, and Stanley. Tho flag at the Wellington Bowling Club was flown at In if mast to-day.
