STATEMENT BY PRIME
MINISTER
(By Telejjraph.) (Special U the "Evening Past.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. Close inquiry is being rfade by the Government as to the best means of affording assistance to the timber industry, and in the course of a week or so we should have before us recommendations concerning suggested amendments of the timber regulations, having as their object the fostering of the use of local timbers," said the Prime Minister yesterday. A sub-committee consisting of representatives of the Valuation, Public Works, Industries and Commerce, and Forestry Departments, appointed last month to investigate the position, had met representatives of the sawmillers, and it was now preparing recommendations as to the possibility of a more extensive use of ordinary building timber by the State Advances, Public Works, and other Government Departments. Mr. Coates mentioned that the Tariff Commission would also make inquiries, and no doubt it would submit recommendations as to what could be done to help the milling industry through the medium of the Customs.
From the information thus made available, said Mr. Coates, the Government would be able to decide whether the regulations should be amended, and m what direction. Possibly, also, they might be able to suggest methods to themSs 6rS WhCreby th6y might hel *
