LITERARY NOTES
Mr. IT. A. L. Fisher's biography of Viscount Bryce is published by Macmillans in two volumes. Mr. Fisher surveys the vrido-ranging activities of his friend as traveller, historian, jurist, statesman, and mountaineer. He dwells especially on the great part of his life ■which Lord Bryce gave to the promotion of a better understanding between England and the United States.
The Earl of Birkenhead's book, "Lifo and the Law," is described as a "challenging commentary on men and affairs." It deals with subjects of varied interest, some of them reminiscent, others belonging to the present, still others prophetic. A note of personal autobiography is struck in such papers as "Leaves Prom a Lawyer's Notebook" and "Milestones of My Life." Hodder and Stoughton publish the work.
The unabridged American edition of Colonel Lawrence's "Seven Pillars of Wisdom "is announced for publication by George Doran, New York, at the price of 20,000 dollars (£4123) a copy. The edition is limited to 22 copies, of which only ten are available to the public. The publisher explains that the high price is charged for the purpose of ensuring the suppression of the full text of the book, in accordance with the author's wish. In order to prevent his English edition from being pirated and published-in America, the author must obtain copyright in the United States- by publishing a limited edition in this country. The unabridged English edition of Colonel Lawrence's book, published last year, was issued to subscribers at 30 guineas a copy. Only 107 copies were printed. Within six months of publication copies changed hands in London at from £120 to £150. The m.s. of this work as originally written by Lawrence was stolen from a handbag in an English railway station, and was never recovered. Lawrence sat down and rewrote it aU. .-''-'. .-•■■-■-!._
