GOVERNMENT'S STAND
GUARANTEE BY IMPORTERS

AUCKLAND, This Day. A deputation of Auckland fruit merchants waited on Mr. Coates at Wellington yesterday in connection withthe dispute with the Cook Islands fruit growers.
The Prime Minister intimated that the Government decided not to make any guarantee to the Union Company, as it was the policy of the Government not to interfere in trade, but ho gave an assurance that everything possible would be done to assist the importers and the traders to keep tho AUcklandEaßtern Pacific service running. After the interview,the Union Company was assured that in consideration of the company running the Waipahi the Auckland .importers would guaran^, tee a certain proportion of any loss that might elisuo. Tho onus is now on the Cook Islands to keep the Waipahi in tho^'serviccf in th 6 interests of ,all concerned. Tho natives aro not compelled to accept the price offered, but have the option of shipping on their own. account and taking tho risk of the market.
