THE COMING CONFERENCE

OBJECT OF THE POOL

Seven wheat-producing countries have signified their intention of being represented at the firat world wheat pool conference to be held in Kansas City in the first week of May. They will be Australia, Canada, United States, India, Argentine, Eussia, and Sweden. Air. Henry Wise Wood, president of the Alberta Wheat Pool, originator of the world pool scheme, expects that the bulk of the 800,000,000 bushels, which constitute the world's average export, will be represented at the conference.

Australia, during the last six months, has established state wheat pools, and Mr. Wood, who recently toured the wheat belt of tho Commonwealth, has been advised that 75 per cent, of the exportable surplus of Australia's present harvest of 165,000,000 bushels will be marketed through the new pools. Eussia is seeking approval of the United States for her delegate to be admitted to tho country to attend the conference. She once produced, 1,000 - 000,000 bushels, ancl exported as much as 300,000,000 bushels. Her export last year was 50,000,000 bushels. The first wheat pool was formed in Canada in 1923. To-day, tho three Pramo provinces, of their exportable total of 300,000,000 bushels, market two-thirds of it through the Canadian Wheat Pool. The movement is growing rapidly in the United States. Mr. Wood, who is likely to be voted to tho chair, states that there is no intention to secure a world monopoly or to raise prices. Tho purpose of the gathering, ho says, is to arrange some mutually approved system of stabilising marketing, regulating the flow of wheat, and the prevention of recurrent glut in the market, which has been attended with loss to wheat producers all over the world.
