AT TIMARU

, CW TO ASSURANCE

Bsesrar successful

■ ■'. (By T«lenraph.) (tpMtal.tfr.lhi "Evening Port.")

■ . TIMARU, This Day. The" condition! were wild and decidedly wintry for the opening day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, with frequent, rain showers accompanied by * bitterly cold southerly wind. The track, however, was in capital order, the rain haying boon sufficient only to take the sting out" of the ground while leaving the course fart. The Steeplechase vria » farce, but the remainder of the events provided excellent racing. The attendance was small and the totalisator showed a drop of nearly £6000," a result largely due to. the weather. TEKAPO HURDLE HANDICAP. For the Tekapo Hurdle Handicap eight -acceptors lined up. It was a good betting race between the four top weights, Dubious T>eing favourite. Goldtown, Bonatic, and Dubious led past the stand, where Coastguard fell. At the seven-fur-long .post Bonatic was several lengths clear of Goldtown, and Dubious, but Kaikahu moved, up and half a mile from home he was in front with Dubious handy. Kaikahu was just clear of Dubious and Oriflarab at the entrance to the straight with Bonatic not far away. Bonatic finished strong, but Kaikahu held his place and beat Bonatic easily by two lengths. Dubious was. a length away third with Oriflamb three lengths further back. . Kaikahu is very well at present, and further successes may be expected during th« winter. ' Bonatic' finished well, but Dubious wag stopping a bit at the last. Jovial'i rider lost a stirrup going along .the back. • GLADSTONE HACK. ■, In a field of eight for the Gladstone Hack Handicap, Shandre was a little bet- . ter backed than Green Cloth, with Brightling and Happy Queen also well backed. t Heal Glad was smartest out with Happy Queen, Green Cloth, and Shandre handy, while Ascetic and Princess Mafalda were ' last. Ascetic soon moved up and after going about two furlongs he was in front; then Princess Mafalda rushed through and half a mile from home she was. showing the way well clear of Ascetic and Happy Queen, while a little further on . Brigntling and Beaming were also handy. Princess Mafalda retired at the entrance to the straight, and Happy Queen was left in charge, and won easily by three lengths j from Brightling. Three lengths further back.came Real Glad with Green Cloth, Shandro, and Beaming only heads away. Happy Queen has been improving steadily for some time, and she may do still better later, on. Shandre raced very disappointingly. , • ELECTRIC STAKES. Sazaini balked when doing his preliminary in the Electric Stakes, crashing through, the fence and finishing up on the road with her shoulder cut. She was allowed to be withdrawn. Solgele was a hot favourite, carrying nearly twice as much as. Gay Sonnet, with All Colours a good third fancy. All Colours was Boon joined in the lead by Solgele with Card Trick, Gay Sonnett, :and Master John handy. At the straight Gay Sonnet took Becond place while Royal Tractor made a forward move. Solgele was beaten as soon as heads were turned for home. Gay ■ Sonnett being left well, clear of Card Trick., Then Royal Tractor put in a good run and got up in the last stride, beating Gay Sonnet by a head. Card Trick was three lengths away,,half a length in front of Bolgsle. ■ The winner is speedy, but not likely to ffcay on. Gay Sonnet is another who is at her best over a short course, gpjgele

has always found five furlongs far enough and in the circumstances too much use was made of him in the early stages.

TIMARU CUP.

The scratching of Rapier and Set Sail left eight starters for the Ximaru Cup. Baldowa carried a few pounds more than Bilbo, with Ophir a good third choice. Tholomon and Fresco led Ophir out of the straight. Ophir moved up in the back stretch, and at the five-furlong post he took charge from Tholomon and Bilbo, with Gay Queen and Fresco nest. Then Tholomon dropped out, and a fnrlong further on Ophir had Bilbo, Gay Queen, Fresco, and Assurance following in that order. Bilbo joined Ophir at the home turn, with Assurance and-Fresco not far away, while Baldowa was moving up on the outside. In a good finish Assurance got up to beat Bilbo by a head, Baldowa being two lengths away, with Ophir three lengths further back, and Fresco next. Assurance has made a wonderful improvement during the last few months, and he is now a solid customer who will do still better this season. Bilbo followed up his Southland form with a useful ef- | fort. Baldowa ran a good race, but coy- I ered a lot of ground. SMITHFIELD HANDICAP. Receipt was a hot favourite for the Sraithfield Handicap, carrying more than twice as much as Eaton Bells, who- was a little better backed than Rob. The first to show out were: Dane ing Days and Lava, with Receipt next, while Eaton Bells soon joined in. . Hurdy Gurdy headed the others. There-was no change till they reached the home turn, where Serotina moved up, while Volant and Overhaul also made their appearance at the entrance to the straight. When fairly in line for the post Dancing Days retired, and a furlong from the post Eaton Bells was just showing the way to Volant, with Receipt and Rob almost on terms. Receipt gradually wore down Eaton Bells and won by a head from Overhaul, who finished very fast and a head in front of Eaton Bells. A neck.away came Volant, who beat Rob by a head. /The winner hag been racing very solidly this season, and Riccarton form pointed to he* having a great chance. She was a trifle lucky, however, that Overhaul's run was delayed bo long. Eaton Bells just failed to see the journey out. OTIPUA STEEPLECHASE For the Otipua Steeplechase Frisco Mail was a good favourite. The race was a very poor, affair. Plencia was in front when he ran off at the first fence, and Frisco Mail followed him; Adjutor then went on from Nightraid, with Glument a'few lengths away. They raced like this for six furlongs, Glument gradually losing ground. Glument baulked and. lost his rider after going six furlongs."The two leaders were I together at the home turn, and they jumped the last fence on terms. Adjutor then drew out and beat Nightraid by four lengths. Frisco Mail was taken back and eventually got round, being seven furlongs away when the leading pair finished. His exhibition of jumping was not good. Adjutor was making hia first appearance over country, and he looks like being a good steeplechaser with more experience. ROSEHILL HANDICAP. Waterlow wag smartest out in the Rosehill Handicap, with Solzia and Flaming Ray almost on terms, but after going a furlong Hoylake joined Waterlow and Flaming Ray in the lead, Dark Spot being last, with Peho just in front of him. A little further on Royal Head moved up, and racing round the turn he was in dose attendance on. Waterlow, with Flaming Kay and Hoy Wee next, while Peho and Moratorium were handy. Waterlow led to the straight, but Peho then shot out and won easily by four lengths from Moratorium, who beat Solzia by two lengths, while half a length away came Flaming Ray, a head in front of Dark Spot, who finished fast. ' ■, .- i Peho's performance was very attractive after her slow start, while Dark Spot also drew attention to his chance the first time he'begins well. : DpfcCASTER HANDICAP. For the Doncaster Handicap Thorndale was..a strong : favourite. Courtly Rose gave trouble at the start, and eventually she refused to jump off. Tarlcton and Sweet Melody were the smartest out, hut at the end of a furlong Sweet -Melody had taken charge from Fairy Herald and Tarleton, with The Harp and Thorndale next. Then Jolly Glad moved up, and she was with the front lot at the home turn. Sweet Melody retired at the entrance to the staught, leaving Fairy Herald and The Harp in charge, with Thorndale, Tarleton, and Jolly Glad handy. The Harp had Fairy Herald beaten a furlong from the post and won by three lengths, lnorndale, despite the vigorous handling, failed to reach the other pair, and he. nnished two lengths behind Fairy Herald, t£ THleton two lengths further back. The Harp won in convincing style, and he appears to be back to something like his best form. Fairy Herald ran a sound race, and should Boon be a winner. Thorndale could not quite go with the leaders in the early stages. Tarleton put up a fino performance for a, horse who has lately resumed work after a spell. OWNER AND JOCKEY SUSPENDED. _The Judicial Committee held an inquiry after the Rosehill Hack Handicap into the running of Waterlow, who led into the straight and then dropped out very suddenly. D. Hall,' the rider, was suspended for six months for failing to ride his mount out, while F. R. Peirce, the owner, was disqualified for twelve months for giving unsatisfactory evidence regarding his betting on the race.
