MOUNT COOK

AGGCHHMOOATION QBfiß**ON

A slight falling off in the Toll number of the Mount Cook ScKool is shown in the annual report. The Bchool started the year with 737 pupils, and ended with 724. The majority of the children rending in the district arc attending the school, bat the attendance seven, years ago was 1000, and it is felt that the 101 l number would now be greater if the infant wing were completed and better accommodation provided. In view of the fact' that adjacent schools- have -better accommodation, it. is thought that residential children are not all attending tho Mount Cook School. At the examinations 37 scholars gained proficiency certificates, and 17 competency certificates. A number of changes have i taken 'place in the school staff/ and regret is expressed at the transfer, of Mr. Clark j to the charge. of ■ the Terrace School, and tho retirement o,f Miss Cook on! superannuation, while the transfer of Miss Cross to Karori is regretted in view of her good work in the infant department. "It is to be regretted," says the report, '' that, notwithstanding tho strenuous endeavours of the committee, a start has not yet been made by the board to rebuild the infant wing of tho school in order to complete tho scheme as originally intended, and definitely promised from'time to time. The pretext furnished is the proposed new school at Newtown West on a site at J&hn street, and the possible future falling off in school attendance at Mount Cook through the gradual conversion of Te Aro flat into an industrial area. As already pointed out, there will always, in the opinion of the committee, be a population in the Monnt Cook School district sufficient at least for a great number of years to come to warrant the rebuilding being completed, even although in a modified form."
