CHARITY INSTEAD OF WORK
(By Telegraph ) (Special t» the "Evmilub Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day. "I thinl; the present indications are that charitable aid 1 will increase during the coming winter," reported Mr. A. J. Phillipps, managing-secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital, to the annual meeting of the board yesterday. "Charitable aid has.increased rapidly in New Zealand during the past two years, not only on. account of the fact that unemployment has been fairly common, but it is obvious to anyone who studios the charitable aid statistics that there is ;a class growing in New Zealand who show an. inclination to seek charitable aid far too readily. It is not uncommon for both the relieving officer and myself to be called upon by young, able-bodied New Zealanders, married, and in their twenties, seeking help very often instead of seeking work. Last winter I was able to deal with a large number of applicants for relief by offering them work cutting wood tin the farm at Awapuni, but very few indeed did any wood-cutting, and. of those who commenced only a few stuck it out long enough to<make anything like reasonable wages."
