A tragic accident is reported at Tasman Island, the site of the lighthouse off Cape Pillar. Five men were erecting a crane on the cliffs for the purpose of hoisting stores to the lighthouse on Friday afternoon, when the crane collapsed. William Groombridge was hurled a hundred feet down the cliffs and killed. Joseph Patterson struck the edge of the cliff, and his foot caught in a wire, where he hung suspended till rescued, badly injured. There was no means of communication with the mainland, except by carrier pigeons, .which were sent out, but were killed by_hawks.
On Saturday a passing vessel responded to distress signals, and sent a wireless message to Hobart for assistance. A ship with a doctor arrived, and managed, after repeated attempts, to land the doctor, but was unable to ■■ take off Patterson until the sea had calmed on Sunday morning, when the injured man was lowered on a stretcher over the cliffs and taken to hospital in a critical condition.
