AT ADDINGTON

OPENING DAY OF ROYAL MEETING SHINE SOON WINS BIG EVENT (Special to. "The Evening post.") CHRISTCHURCH, Mtu March. The New Brighton Trotting Club's I\oyal Meeting, held at Addington, was commenced to-day. Tho weather was dull and threatening in tho morning, ■but the clouds disappeared, and', the conl uitions later v. the day were idoal The course was in excellent order. There was a large attendance, to witness some good sport, and a general air of festivity was apparent. The totalisntor investments were ±.20,21 >, compared with £20,455 10s on the corresponding day last year, when the club raced at New Brighton. IMPROVERS' HANDICAP. Racing opened with the Improvers' Handicap, which attracted a field of eighteen slow class trotters. Sea Queen, Nelson Wood, and Nelsor Boy divided favouritism. Oval soon opened out a gap of a dozen lengths, Nelson Boy being in second place at the end of half a mile, while at the mile post Wildbine was third, iucse three ware together three furloncs from home. Wildbine then drew out and ho went on to win easily. Guy Purrisli finished with a great run, but.was six lengths behind the winner. Merry Peter A™, s a. length away third, with Sarspanlln, Herbihvyn, and Great Amazon close up. The winner is a well-bred gelding by Jil Carbine, his dam, Miss Wild Poolo coming from one of the best of tho old trotting families. Guy Purrisli showed a fine turn of speed at the end. BELFAST HANDICAP. 7,4r lcl'°Y Wel'c starters for Ihc Belfast Handicap, Meb being a little better backed than Evelyn Loeandn. Tho early leaders were Reta Tracey and Yen with Amazon, Meb, Mirie Dillon; Jackie Audubon, and. Evelyn Locanda handy J.hese seven had the race to themselves most of the way. Meb and Jackie Audubou led round the home turn, where Springtime put in her claim. Meb took charge in the straight, and won easily by four lengths, Springtime beating Miri'o Dillon by three lengths, with Evelyn Lovanda only a neck away. The winner is a smart three-year-old filly who is likely to reach good class next season. BURWOOD HANDICAP. The Burwood Handicap, tho chief event of the day, attracted a field of nine including two trotters, one of whom, Escapade, was favourite in a good betting race. Brentloc soon opened up a gap of a dozen lengths from Succession, while at the end of half a mile the others were all handy, except Napland and Wharepmna, who had tailed off. At the mile post Brentloc was still showing the way but his lead had been reduced to two lengths. Three furlongs from home Tren;md and Brcnlloc went on together, with laleut, Shine Soon, and Escapade in close attendance. Brentloc then dropped out Irenand led to the straight, but Shine Goon beat him homo by two lengths Talent being two lengths away, with Brenlloc a poor fourth. Shine Soon put up a solid performance She is not done winning. Trenand added another to his exasperating record of seconds. BrentLc failed to stay, and Escapade also disappointed over the last part ot the journey. CASHMERE HANDICAP. | Twenty-one saddle horses lined up for

the Cashmere Handicap, Kreisler being a hot favourite. It was not an exciting race. La Sonnette and Acco were the early leaders, with His Majesty and Loehree next, and the order was unchanged half a mile from home, where, Kreisler took fifth place. A little further on La Sonnette was beaten. Acco was well clear at the entrance to the straight, and he w;on_ easily by half a dozen lengths from Kreisler, who was eased up, and just lasted long enough to stall off Alvira's late run by a length. Wenlo and La Sonnette were next. The winner, who is by Our Thorpe, is a very solid customer, and he could have gone a lot faster. Thraneen and Mirie Dillon, who- were second and third favourites, were never sighted. Kreisler was a trifle slow to get going, but never looked like catching the winner. AUTUMN HANDICAP. In a field of ten unhoppled trotters for the Autumn Handicap, Lazarus was favourite, but he broke badly after going six furlongs. Wild Hebe was smartest out, with Merry Peter, Young Carbine, and Lady Fan handy. There was no change for six furlongs, when Lady Fan took second place, with Young Carbine not far away. Half a mile from home Wild Hebe and Lady Fan had Young Carbine, Frisco Beau, and Nighborn in close attendance. A little further, on Lady Fan took charge, but Frisco Beau wore her down in the straight and won by a neck. Three _ lengths away came Wild Hebe, a neck in front of Nighborn, who broke twice in the straight. The winner, who is one of Mr. J. R. M Kenzie's American importations, trotted very . solidly all the way. DASH HANDICAP. There were eighteen runners for the Dash Handicap. Key Logan, Vera's Doll, and Berenice were fancied in t,hat order. Hydaspes led out from Drone, Peter King, anj Berenice, and they were still showing the way at the end of half a mile, where Haunui and Bey Logan were also handy. A furlong further on Hydaspes and Drone were together in the lead, with Eey Logan next, and Berenice fourth. On reaching the straight Eey Logan went to the front, with Berenice in hot pursuit, and a great finish saw Berenice get up on the post, to beat Eey Logan by a head Haunui was four lengths away, with Hydaspes close up. The exciting struggle between father and son roused the crowd to enthusiasm, and young Maurice Holmes, driver of Berenice, received an ocation on his success, following on some good-natured banter. His father, F. Holmes, drove Rey Logan. WAINONI HANDICAP. A high-class field, numbering nineteen, contested the Wainoni Handicap. The Dalnahine-Taurekareka bracket was easily first choice with backers. Trenand showed the way for the start, General Bingen following him for half a mile, where Golden Devon, Ouimet, Bessie Lo^an and Fight Ever were handy. Half a mile from home Trenand had Golden Devon and Fight Ever as his nearest attendants. These three were in close order at the entrance to the straight, where Golden De took charge, and though he won stopping at the end, he stalled off Trenand's challenge by half a length. Fight -Ever was two lengths away, with Loganwood and Bessie Logan next. The winner is at hij best at a mile and

a quarter^ but he is not a good stayer. jNeither Ualnahine nor Taurekareka ever threatened danger. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. The day's sport concluded with the ilectnc Handicap,, a mile saddle event, m a neld of seventeen Queen's General was a pronounced favourite, but her backers got a poor run, as she failed to leave the mark. Macanda and Zenith showed the way from the start, while at the end of two furlongs Lord Bingen, Grey Cloud, and Locanda Child were at the head of the others Half a mile from home Lord Bingen and Grey Cloud were in charge, with Locanda Child, Zenith, and Eosie iNut next. Lord Bingen and Zenith were done with when the straight was reached, toey Cloud drawing out, to win easily by three lengths, while Eosie Nut finished iTn'-th 0 Locanda Child by half a Grey Cloud has registered some smart performances this season, and he is not done with yet.
