BIRMINGHAM CAMPAIGN

MARKETING BOARD ASSISTS

(From Our Own Correspondent)

LONDON, 26th January.' One of tho methods of advertising Empire produce which tlio Empire Marketing Board will adopt is the display of such produce at the various trade exhibitions throughout the country. The first effort in this direction may now bo seen at Birmingham, where the annual Grocers' and Allied Trade Exhibition, promoted by the Birmingham and Midland Counties Grocers' Association, is in progress at Binglcy Hall., Tho main object of the exhibition is to place before the retailers the best and newest products within the sphere of the grocery trades. Numbering approximately 70, the stands fill the hall and annexe,, and the Varied nature of tho displays provide much which.commands the attention not only of traders but also of tho general public, while the housewife is especially catered for by a series of eodkery demonstrations. Illustrated lectures by representatives of the.. Dominion Governments have boon arranged, and a number of competitions in such subjects as window-dressing, packing, cof-fee-roasting, and tea blending are open to retail grocers and assistants'. Con-certs-are being given each afternoon and evening by. the band of the Royal Air Force. Each, of the Bominioiis has a stand arranged by the Empire Marketing Eoarcl in co-operation with the respective High Commissioners' staffs. The Now Zealand stand has' ornamental pillars, and on the arches the nam£ of the Dominion is prominently displayed. Tho Dairy 'Produce Board supplied butter and cheese for the; stand,; and beside these there are a number of transparencies and photographs illustrating the industry iv New Zealand. Printed cards indicate tlie extent of trade with tho Mother Couutry, the number of cows milked by machinery, the number of separators in use, nnd other interesting facts of that; kind. , '! There are also displays of dried milk, Glaxo, toheroas, whitebait, samples of seeds, and wheat sheaves help in the decorative scheme. The whole effect is set off by a fine New Zealand, coat-of-urms in plaster provided by/the Marketing Board. The display is made still more effective by flood lighting. la the past the whole cost of such exhibition work has fallen on the High Commissioner's Department, and the expense has limited the effectiveness of the display. Now that the Marketing Board has undertaken the work the New Zealand' Publicity Department will be able to extend its operations very considerably. 85, Fleet street. ■■ . ■
