PETONE AND THORNDON.

Petone started off well at the commencement of their match with Thorndon at Petone on Saturday. Winning the toss Brice elected to bat, and H. Nicholls and Capstick went to the crease, to the bowling of Hyder and Carruthers. The pair soon settled down, and set a lively pace running the total up to 108 before Capstick was caught by Kortlang. M. Nicholls wentejn, but only added 9 before he was bowled by Ellerm. Brice followed, and lasted about half au hour, compiling 22, including one 6. M. Nicholls reached his century two or three minutes before 5 o'clock, and was warmly- congratulated by both his opponents and teammates. He lasted only another ten minutes, however, being bowled by Carruthers when his total was 103. This included eighteen 4's. Reyling was the next to make a stand, and he compiled 26 before he hit his wicket. He gave a bright lively exhibition, and was unfortunate to' go out in Ihe way he did. Hardy scored 12 before he was bowled by Hyder, and Wilson carried his bat for 17, the innings closing for 271 runs. Stumps were then drawn.

Kortlang tried eight bowlers during the afternoon, but ■ Carruthers was the only one of outstanding merit, securing three wickets for 33 runs. Foley and Ellerm cot two wickets each, for 41 and 27 respectively. Details:— l
