Count Cavour may still make the journey to Sydney, but he is to race first at the Wellington Meeting in the Trentham G,old Cup. On Saturday morning' at Eiccarton- he galloped a mile and a quarter in 2min 10 4-ssec.
Training gallops over a mile and a half are unusual nowadays, but that was the task allotted Footfall in'his, work last Saturday at Eiccafton, in re.-diness. for the Trentham Gold Cup. He had a mate in the middle of the gallop, but started and finished alone, running the full journey in 2mm 39 3-ssee. He is due to leave home to-morrow for Trentham, where he is engaged only oh the concluding day. ' According to J; H. Jefferd, Eapine has done'weir of late. With the tracks hard, the old Martian gelding has not been asked to do more than sprint a few furlongs. These have kept nis pipes open, and, being a gr«- --winded horse and a true: stayer, he should be little short- of his best on' Saturday, He will : be, the Gold Cup favourite at Trentham.
