AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL

FIRST DAY AT NEWTOWN PARK. Axemen and sawyers from all parts of New Zealand are taking part in the Axemen's Carnival, which was commenced at Newtown Park this afternoon. Entries total 270, and the average nomination for each of the four open handicap chopping events is over 40. The entrants include the bestknown and most proficient competitors in both islands. Automatic judging machines are being used in all standing [ chopping events, and in all sawing events, and as special frames are being used to hold the logs there will be no delays caused by the nailing on of blocks. The carnival is to be continued on Tuesday afternoon.
