ISLAND OR EMPIRE?

' THE BRITISH WORKER (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, 28th December. Sir Stanley Machin, ex-president of the Association of British Chambers of Commerce, expresses himself as being entirely in sympathy with the suggestion of "The Empire Mail" that British firms, on the receipt of a contract from a Dominion or colony, should inform their work people of the amount of employment thereby afforded, and recommend them to reciprocate by purchasing as far as possible the foodstuffs or other produce of the country providing the employment. Sir Stanley adds: 'fThe opportunities we are missing are immense, and education about the Empire and its possibilities is of the first importance. I have given notice for this question to be raised at the Empire Chambers Congress, to be held in Capetown next year. I am more than ever convinced that it is to the development of the Empire that wo must look for the solution of our unemployment problem. I pursued this line when speaking at Portsmouth recently, and am satisfied that some day we shall realise that as an Empire we shall flourish; as an island we shall fail."
