MR. THEODORE ELECTED
MEMBER OF FEDERAL HOUSE
(United Press Association.—Copyright.)
(Received 28th February, 7 a.m.)
SYDNEY, This Day.
The by-election for the Dalley seat, to fill the-vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. Mahoney, was held on Saturday.
Mr. E. G-. Theodore, ex-Premier of Queensland, the Labour candidate, was elected. The final figures gave him a majority of 8514 votes.
. Mr. E. G. Theodore, retired from Queensland politics in order to enter the larger arena provided by the Commonwealth, but he was not successful in winning the Herbert seat at the last General Election, though it was in doubt right up to the final count. Mr. Theodore dominated Queensland politics for some years. He first entered Parliament in 1909, and until the last General Election was never defeated at the polls. Within three years of his first election his powers of speech, of debate, and of leadership brought him to- th". position of deputy leader of his party, which was then in Opposition. When Labour came into office under the late Mr. Ryan Mr. Theodore became his chief Minister, and when Mr. Ryan left State for Federal polities Mr. Theodore in 1910 attained the Premiership, which ho has sinco resigned to follow , the example sot by his late State leader. According to recent Australian files, it is probable that Mr. Theodore will become leader of the Federal Labour Party, as Mr. Charlton has not given a great deal of satisfaction of late.
