AT WOODVILLE

STAR AREA WINS HANDICAP

SOME CLOSE FINISHES

(By Telegraph.—From Vedette.)

The Woodville Meeting was concluded on Saturday: under most pleasant weather conditions.: The racing was again highclass, there being a number of very close finishes, including r one dead-heat. The attendance was poor-for a Saturday, and 'there was another decided shrinkage in the tptalisator. It looks as if the club has not gained by changing from the midweek. The totalisator turnover was £12,----943, compared with £16,07,0 last year. The total decrease on the meeting was £7297. Although Mr., C.. O'Connor officiated at the barrier, it is possible that he had not completely recovered from the illness which overtook him at Wanganui, for his work was below par. HOPELANDS HURDLES. Calluna wound up favourite, with fair support for Vexatious, Kalakaua, and Anchor. Son o' Mine, Cracker Day,, Axle, and Calluna led to the first fence, and down the straight the order was Anchor, Calluna, Son o' Mine, Axle, Cracker Day, Sir Wai, and Vexatio":. San Pedro stumbled and almost fell at the second fence. Five furlongs from home Cracker Day took charge from Calluna, Son o' Mine, Sir Wai, Vexatious, and Kalakaua. Calluna made a' bad jump and lost ground, and San Pedro rushed up, to lead across the top and to the turn with Cracker Day, with Calluna, Vexatious, Anchor, and Sir Wai next. San Pedro and Cracker Day were on terms at the last fence, with Vexatious coming fast.. Vexatious, in the end won comfortably by three lengths from' Cracker Day, with San Pedro two lengths away. Calluna, Sir. Wai, Kalakaua, and Son o' Mine were next. Vexatious ran a similar race to that of the first day, and finished particularly well. She was a good way back at one stage. Cracker Day ran another really good race, not too well handled. San Pedro surprised by his forward running. A bad jump settled Calluria's chance, but he should soon make-amends. Sir Wai and Kalakaua both did fairly well. NOVICE PLATE. Grand National was a very hot favourite, but he was interfered with at the barrier,, and gave the field too big a start to have any chance. Arrow Boy, Lucre, Jemidar, Eloquent, and Colarina began best, but Lucre rushed to the front, and led across the top from Arrow Boy, Colarina, and Jemidar, with the rest strung out. Jemidar ran to the front soon after they turned for home, and he went on and won, comfortably by three lengths. Mandarine finished fast on the rails, and beat Arrow Boy by half a length for second place. Coteina was fourth, and Lucre, Gordon Swift, and Mister Gamp next. ■ ' ■■ ■ The winner and runner-up were bracketed on the totalisator, both carrying" Mr. Brie Uiddiford's colours. Jemidar made no race of it, and outclassed the rest. Mandarine showed great dash at the end. The dividend was a good double-figure one. Arrowboy ran a great race, and should soon win a maiden event. Lucre is another to be-kept in mind. Mister Gamp' was unlucky at the barrier. * AUTUMN'HANDICAP. Magna. Charta was at pronounced odds-on his backers .suffering a decided loss on the second dividend. Magna Charta again went out to win all the way, and down the _ straight he was well clear of Willow Wai, who was followed by Hipo and Peneus, with Star Area next, and Merry Day and Queen's Choice last. So they ran right round to the half-mile post, where Star Area moved up, and Hipo went up to Willow Wai. Magna Charta just showed the way to Hipo, Willow. Wai, Star Area, and Merry Day at the turn. Hipo was done 100 yds from home, and Star Area gradually wore down Magna Charta, with Queen's Choice putting in a great run on the outside. Star Area got up to Ijeat Magna Charta by a head, with Queen's Choice a head away third. Hipo was fourth, and Willow Wai next." Star Area was ridden a good race by J. Barry, and he scored by only the narrowest of margins just by sticking on with the pull in the weights. Although beaten Magna Charta was not disgraced; a three-year-old trying to win all the way_ with 8.13. Queen's Choice, who looked in need of the race, came with a great rattle. He should soon score. Hipo really had every chance, but possibly L. George made his effort just too soon. Peneus was chopped out four furlongs from home, but he made no impression after. ' '•' MANGAPAPA HANDICAP. Aston was a tot favourite, with a fair amount of money for Kilmezzo. Polonaise began best from Aston, Kilmezzo, Lady Cynthia, and Nastori. Aston was up ,with Polonaise at the turn, with Kilmezzo handy, and Lady Cynthia next. ' ston took charge a furlong from home, but the apprentice on Mm was outridden, Lady Cynthia beating him home by half a length. Kilmezzo was half a length away third, with Lin Arlington <a good fourth, and Break o 1 Day, Polonaise and Some Lad next. , Lady Cynthia should have been second, for Aston was-handled in a very weak manner at the finish. Kilmezzo rrn a really good race without being handled in the most accomplished manner. Lin Arlington was finishing on, and he is sure to be m the money soon. Polonaise and Nastori stopped badly. Some Lad lost his phance by being squeezed out early.. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. Jazz Baby wound up favourite, but there was good money £ jr Papaponga, Black Mint, Lady Ideal, and Mireusonta. •Papaponga received all th« best of the start and-Lady Ideal the worst. Papaponga was soon two lengths clear, and led across the top from Standard, Jazz Baby, Lady laeal (who made up her ground quickly) Royal Divorce, and Black Mint. Standard went up to Papapone?. in the straight with Jazz Baby and Royal Divorce also goJng well. Standard finished just too well and beat Papaponga by a short head, with Jazz Baby three-quarters of a length away third. Eoyal Divorce was right up fourth, and Black Mint and llireusonta next. Standard, who always gallops well fresh put up a really good performance, for the ad%'antage Papaponga received, v at the outset should have won him the race. Jazz Baby was not disgraced, for he was always in the picture. Eoyal Divorce looked in rare buckle, and did a dashing preliminary. He finished so. well that he may be a possibility for one of the big autumn handicaps. Black Mint was running on, and should do better at seven furlongs. Mireusonta missed the jump-out. DEBUTANTE STAKES. Arrow Lad was backed down to oddson, with anything else at a good price. From an uneven dispatch Moa Bird was left, and Miss Trillion) who \ad delayed the start, jumped away on thd move Vigilance and Mori began best from King Midas, but Miss Trillion soon joined them. The order across the top was Vigilance, King Midas, Miss Trillion, Arrow Lad, Mori, and Callanmore. King Midas went up to Vigilance in the straight, ai*d Arrow Lad also joined in. Arrow Lad finished best, and beat Vigilance by half a length, with King Midas six lengths away third. Wild Pigeon was fourth, and Callanmore, Hygrade, and Blue Mist were next. Arrow Lad again did not have the best of the running, yet he won well. Vigilance, from a favourable barrier-position, ran a great race and shook off a challenge by King Midas. The latter ran well under increased weight. Miss Trillion showed a good deal of pace for three furlongs,

and Callanmore was again well up all the way. Wild Pigeon was going on at the end. MAHARAHARA HANDICAP. Modern was favourite, but there was such good backing for Beaumont. Penman, and Horomea that she returned a good pries. Benmure and Modern began best from Tongatotoa, Penman, and Royal Diadem. Royal Diadem went on up to the leaders, the order across the top being Benmure, Tongatotoa, and Royal Diadem just ahead of Penman, Modern, and Horomea. Benmure, Tongatotoa, and Royal Diadem were the first into the straight, just ahead of Penman and Modern. Penman came up on the rails and Modern on j the outside, Modern beating Penman by ■ two lengths. Royal Diadem was four lengths away third, with " Wilderness fourth, and Coot, Horomea, and Gardant next. Modern, who was unlucky when she finished third on the first day, was always going well in behind the leaders. At the end she scored easily. Penman's rider cut the corner and this gained him second place. Royal Diadem showed plenty of pace, but , Beaumont was never sighted. Horomea and Wilderness both appeared to be unlucky. KUMEROA HANDICAP. y»rtigern was a very hot favourite, carrying nearly as much as the second and third favourites together. Inoe, Twink, and Vartigern were the leaders past the stands, with Avazone, Kilburn, and No Favours next. Twink, Inoe, and Avazone together showed the way down the back from Vertigern and Kilburn. Avazone dropped out three furlongs from home, where Twink and Inoe were showing the way to Vertigern, Kilburn, and No Favours. Kilburn went up to the leaders at the furn, where Vertigern tried to go through on the rails. No Favours went after Kilburn, and Fiery Comet came fast on the Outside. In a great finish the judge could not separate Fiery Comet and No Favours, whije X" v )urn was only threequarters of a length away. Vertigern was right up fourth, and then came Inoe and Twink. It was a good' wind up. No Favours put plenty of dash into his finishing effort for once, and Fiery Comet just caught him in the last stride. Fiery Comet came from a long way back. Kilburn had every chance, but was not quite good enough. Vertigern's backers 1: ■] some cause to be discontented, for the Australian three-year-old was steered into ; n impossible position at the turn. Inoe ran her most solid race since the Awapuni Summer Meeting. Twink dropped.out at the end. Details:— Hopelands Hurdles, of 125 soys; one mile and a half.— 3 Vexatious, 8.5 (A.
