WELLINGTON'S TEAMS

MATCHES AGAINST CANTER-

BURY

A great aeal of interest is being taken locally in the personnel of the Wellington team which is to defend the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association's challenge for the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield, at present held by Canterbury. Although Wellington has made several previous attempts to capture the shield, so far all efforts have been in vain, but enthusiasts are very hopeful that this' season the shield will be brought to Wellington. Never before in the history of local tennis has Wellington been in such a strong position, especially in regard to. its men players. The' team has been selected as follows:—

E. D. Andrews (captain) ' N. R. C. "Wilson Len France Don France. Each of these players has represented the Dominion on several occasions, and in addition Andrews is the present New Zealand singles champion, Wilson last year was one of the pair which' won the doubles championship, Don France is holder of the mixed doubles title, and Len France has several championships to his credit. The emergencies are Dr E. B. W. Smyth and C.E. Malfroy, bo|h'. players with fine tennis reputations. The team leaves by the ferry steamer next Thursday evening, • the challenge matches being played on Friday and Saturday of next week. On the Monday following an interprovincial match between Wellington and Canterbury will be played at Christekurch, for which.the following team of six laaies ana six men has been selected:—E. D. Andrews, N. B. C. Wilson, Len France, Don France, Dr. Smyth, ana C. E. Malfroy. The ladies selected are Miss Arita Howe (the present lady singles champion), Mrs. Melody, Miss Tracy, Miss East, and Miss Travers. The sixth lady will be selected from Misses North and Brady and Mrs. Marshall, for whom a series of trial matches have been arranged for to-morrow. Only the Memorial Shield team leaves on Thursday next, the six ladies and two extra men leaving for the South on Saturday .week. -The chairman of the Management Committee has issued instructions that the whole team is to assemble to-mor-row morning at 10.30. at the Thorndon Club's courts for practice, when, it is pointed out, the attendance of everybody selected is imperative. It is understood that each player has signified his or her ability to take part in the tour, which means that the strongest combination. Wellington can possibly send will take part in both the challenge, and inter-provincial matches. Mr. G. N. Goldie, who has been prominently connected with the game for many years, will act in the capacity of manager to both teams, and he will also make_ the necessary arrangements for practice prior to the team's departure for Christcfrurch. ,
