PICNICS.

The first annual staff picnic of the Railway District Traffic Manager's ' Office was held at Maidstone Park under Ideal weather conditions on Sunday. Approximately- 160 adults and children . were present.. A cricket match resulted In a close finish. A sports programme lvas onjoyed, and prizes were presented by the patron, Mr. J. A most successful outing at Maldstone Park was enjoyed by ths firm of Coulls, Somervllle, and WilMe, Ltd., who held their eighth annual picntc on Friday last There was an attractive programme of sports events, in which the children's races were under the direction of Mrs. H. Coull, and not one child was forgotten. Excellent luncheon and tea were provided, during which many happy speeches were made by heads of the staff. Mr. H. Coull responded, paying tribute to all members of the stall for their loyal services during the past year. During the day Mrs. H. Coull presented the trophies to the winners of the sports events. Thanks are due to the organising committee for their efforts in making the picnic most successful. Besults of the sports. events are:—Apprentice handicap, Blair 1, Still 2. Ladles' handicap. The staff of the Education Department held •their annual picnic on Wednesday last at Day's Bay. A most enjoyable day was spont, commencing at 9 a.m. with the annual cricket match for the Anderson Shield, between the child welfare branch and head office. The shield was annexed by the head office team with a score of 141 to child welfare's score of 82. For the winners, I. J. Smith 54, T. Fletcher 37, and Craik 16, and for child welfare Eyau 29, E. Ltvick 10, J. Barber 10, Bolls, not out, 8, were the best acorers. Bowling for head office, M'Kinnon took six wickets for 21, A. Barber one for 26, and W. T. Foster three for 13, and for child welfare, M'Manon took four for 39, J. Barber one for 23, Ryan five for 48, and Lake none for 31. Dr. Anderson, the donor, presented the shield during afternoon tea. After lunch a programme of sports was carried out, with the following results:—looyds handicap: J. Cottlor 1; J Arthurs, 2. 2Soyds handicap: Wlckens 1Arthurs, 2. 75yds ladies: Miss WUlcocks, 1. 220 yds ladles' walk: Miss Jacobs, 1; Miss Willcocks, 2. 440 yds men's walk: Grelg, 1; Alley, 2. Veterans' race: Burgess, 1; Parr, 2 Whistling race: Mrs. Jameson and J. Cottier, 1; Mrß. Lake and D. Alley, 2. Tug-o'-war-Inspector's team. Amongst the visitors to the picnic were the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. A. Wright, and Mrs. Wright, Dr. W J. Anderson and Mr. J. Caughley (two former Directors of Education). A dance in ths pavilion concluded a fine day's outing. The committee—Miss Brooke-Taylor, Messrs. W Yates, J. H. Poulter, J. Mills, and W. A. Jameson (secretary)—worked hard to make the gathering a success. .
